FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a GFCI

A GFI, or GFCI – Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter devices protects us from receiving electric shocks from faults in the electrical devices we use in our home.
GFCI protection can be provided by the now familiar receptacle with the test and reset buttons, or at the distribution panel by way of a GFCI circuit breaker, which protects the entire circuit and any receptacles as well.

How does it work?

By comparing the input current on the hot side to the output current on the neutral side. If there is any difference in current, like a few milliamps, then current flow is taking an alternate path – perhaps through someone or something that it shouldn’t be.
To protect us in this situation, the device cuts off the power supply to the leaking device, within 20-30 milliseconds.

GFCI and AFCI, what is the difference?

The AFCI should not be confused with the GFCI. The AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) also known as an arc-fault detection device (AFDD) protects against fires caused by arcing faults. Arcing faults often occur in damaged or deteriorated wires and cords. Another place an arcing can occur is a loose connection, such as switches, light fixtures, receptacles, etc.

Where should you have one?

GFCI protection should be provided anywhere there is a receptacle installed in an area subject to moisture, as the presence of moisture greatly increases the danger of accidental shock.
The National Electric Code specifies many such areas in residential dwelling units, such as, but not limited to: Bathrooms; Kitchen receptacles; Garages and accessory buildings; All exterior receptacles; Crawl spaces; Unfinished basements; Laundry, Utility, Wet Bar Sink Areas, etc.
Also any pool receptacles and most residential pool pumps and equipment need gfci protection. Any gfci receptacles installed in outdoor locations should be of the “weather resistant” type and in a weatherproof box as well. In most older homes there is no equipment ground wire. If you want legally install 3 prong receptacles, you can install GFCI without having to install more wires.
These devices help save lives

Does it need maintenance ?

If any particular outlet doesn’t seem to be providing power, not only should you check the circuit breakers, but also check any GFCI outlets with push buttons in the area.
If you need GFCI/AFCI installed or you are unsure if you have it and it is working, you can contact Phillip for help. The Best Electrician in the Greater Atlanta Area.

Pool Safety

If your pool is somewhat aged, it is a good idea to check the electrical installation. Codes gets updated and often for a good reason. Having an electrical fault near water close to water can be a deadly combination.

Connections and wiring can deteriorate or corrode in an environment that has chemicals and humidity. It is a good safety precaution to have GFCI protection in outlets or at your breaker panel. If you are unsure if your pools electrical is up to code and safe, you can contact Phillip for help. The Best Electrician in the Greater Atlanta Area.
