Most EV owners plug their car into whatever outlet is available in the garage and call it fine. The problem is that a standard outlet isn't built to handle hours of continuous charging demand. It's undersized, unprotected, and not rated for the job. That's the kind of setup that causes problems over time.

Here's what we did instead. We ran a dedicated 50 amp circuit from the panel straight to the garage wall - properly sized for continuous EV charging load. We installed a weather-resistant receptacle rated specifically for EV use, with GFCI protection built in. That's not optional, that's just doing it right.

The detail we're most proud of on this one is the forward planning. The conduit we ran is sized to accommodate a second circuit down the road. So if this customer adds another EV - or if a spouse gets one - the heavy lifting is already done. No tearing into walls again. No starting from scratch. Just pull the wire and go.

We also updated the panel directory so both EV plug circuits are clearly labeled. It sounds small, but it matters. A clean, organized panel tells you everything about how a job was approached. The 50 amp double-pole breaker is landed cleanly, and everything from the panel to the receptacle is done to code.

Getting an EV charger installed the right way is one of those things that pays off every single time you plug in. No tripped breakers, no slow overnight charges, no wondering if your setup is safe. Just reliable, full-speed charging every night.
