







A failed outdoor GFCI outlet is one of those things that's easy to ignore - until it becomes a real problem. Water, humidity, and years of exposure take a toll on these outlets, and when the protection fails, you're left with a safety risk right on the exterior of your home. That's exactly what we were dealing with here.
The old outlet was well past its prime. The cover was brittle and worn, the GFCI itself had failed, and the box wasn't giving the wiring the protection it needed. Before pulling anything out, we tested the outlet with a Klein Tools outlet tester to confirm what we were working with - open ground, wiring issues, and a GFCI that simply wasn't doing its job anymore. That kind of diagnostic step matters. It tells us exactly what we're up against before we start the work.
Once we pulled the old outlet, the condition of the box made it clear why things had gotten to this point. Deteriorated siding around the box, exposed wiring, and no real moisture barrier to speak of. This is what years of a failing cover and no proper sealing will do. We replaced everything - new weather-resistant GFCI outlet, a properly rated in-use cover, and sealed the top and sides to keep water from getting behind the box.
The finished install is a clean, solid setup. The new GFCI is rated WR - weather resistant - which is what the NEC requires for outdoor locations. The in-use cover keeps the outlet protected even when something is plugged in. And the sealant along the top edge means rain and moisture aren't finding their way in. It's the kind of GFCI compliance and protection work that makes a real difference in both safety and longevity.
