








That burning smell in a home is one of those things you really can't afford to ignore. It usually means something is wrong - and in this case, it was very wrong. A nearby lightning strike had sent a massive surge of energy right through an exterior GFCI outlet, and the damage it left behind was severe.
When we pulled the outlet off the wall, the situation became clear fast. The wiring inside the box was completely carbonized - melted down to twisted, blackened remnants. The GFCI receptacle itself had a chunk of its housing blown clean off. The junction box behind it was scorched and warped beyond any safe reuse. Nothing at the original location was salvageable. At that point, the only right call was to abandon that location entirely and reroute the circuit to a new spot on the exterior wall.
That's a big part of what electrical remodel and repair work actually looks like in real life. It's not always a straightforward swap. Sometimes you open things up and find that the damage has compromised the structure around the box - the siding, the sheathing, the framing behind it. You have to assess all of it before you move forward.
We ran new wire to a fresh location, installed a new outdoor-rated box, and finished it with a proper GFCI outlet inside a weatherproof in-use cover. That green light on the new outlet tells you everything is wired correctly and the GFCI protection is active. The old location was capped off with a blank cover plate - no live wires, no exposed box, nothing left to be a hazard.
If you've noticed a burning or hot smell coming from an outlet - especially after a storm - that's not something to wait on. Lightning damage can smolder inside a wall for a long time before it becomes an obvious problem. Getting it checked out early is always the safer, smarter move.
